About Me

My name is Megan I. Culbert. I am a genealogist and the founder and owner of Little Owl Genealogy. I earned a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Master of Arts in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program at SUNY Oneonta. I also earned a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University's Center for Professional Education.

My experience includes working as an associate curator at a museum, where I curated several exhibitions, and as a research assistant at a research library, where I conducted local history and genealogy research for patrons. I have also conducted freelance research and writing for a genealogical organization. My volunteer experience has included curating exhibitions for a local historical society and judging students' history projects at New York History Day.

My interest in genealogy was first sparked as a child, reading a book that my maternal great-grandmother wrote about her life and her family history. Relatives on both sides of my family conducted invaluable research on various branches of my family tree long before I was born. Both of my parents have continued that important work and instilled in me a passion for history and genealogy.

I am a member of the following genealogical organizations:

  • Association of Professional Genealogists

  • National Genealogical Society

  • New York Genealogical & Biographical Society

  • Capital District Genealogical Society

Specialties

I currently specialize in New York State genealogy—especially Central New York genealogy—from the late 18th century to the 20th century, but I hope to expand to other geographic locations and other areas of genealogy as I learn more and gain more experience. I love learning, and I relish the opportunity to learn more about people from different places and time periods. The geographic area in which I am currently specializing includes the following counties: Otsego County, Herkimer County, Oneida County, Delaware County, Schoharie County, Montgomery County, Madison County, Chenango County, and Fulton County. If your research project is outside this geographic area, don't let that deter you from contacting me. I have genealogy experience in other geographic areas as well. Get in touch with me to discuss your project, and if it is truly outside my areas of expertise, I will try to recommend other genealogists you could contact who specialize in that geographical area or in that area of genealogy.

About the Name “Little Owl Genealogy”

My mother's maiden name means "Little Owl," and I thought that it was a unique and fitting name for my genealogy business.

About the Logo

Artist: Maureen Culbert
Watercolor, acrylic, and pencil on paper, 2025

The logo for Little Owl Genealogy was created by my mother, artist Maureen Culbert. It depicts the owl species Little Owl (Athena noctua), a symbol of wisdom associated with the Greek goddess Athena and her Roman counterpart Minerva.
